MTR Corporation has over 40 years of end-to-end rail expertise: from design to planning and construction through to commissioning, maintenance, and operations. In addition to this extensive knowledge, MTR Corporation also advocates a its “rail plus property” model of development which seamlessly integrates rail, commercial and residential development around key transport hubs. 

The company was established in 1972 in Hong Kong. Since then, MTR Corporation has formed a number of subsidiary companies and operates in Asia, Europe and Australia.

Europe Operations


MTR UK, a newly created entity, replaced MTR Europe as of 1 October 2020.  Going beyond railway delivery and operation, MTR also creates and manages dynamic communities around its network through seamless integration of rail, commercial and property development.

In the UK, MTR Elizabeth line currently operates as TfL Rail, running services to the east and west of London. When Crossrail construction works are complete, TfL Rail will form the Elizabeth line, the first new train line in London for a generation designed to make journeys across the capital faster, easier and more reliable. The line will run from Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east to Reading and London Heathrow in the west.

MTR UK also holds a minority share in South Western Railway (SWR). It operates commuter services from London Waterloo to South West London, as well as suburban and regional services in Surrey, Hampshire, Dorset, Devon, Somerset, Berkshire and Wiltshire. Its subsidiary Island Line runs services on the Isle of Wight.


In Sweden, MTR Corporation successfully runs services including the Stockholm Metro and the MTR Express, an intercity railway between Stockholm and Gothenburg.

Hong Kong and China Operations

In Hong Kong, MTR Corporation runs more than ten commuter railway lines in the city, a Light Rail network, an Airport Express link and a High Speed Rail network connecting Hong Kong to mainland China. Around 5.9 million passenger journeys are made every day using MTR services.

In mainland China, MTR Corporation was involved in the construction and now operates Beijing Metro Line 4, Daxing Line, Line 14 and Line 16, Shenzhen Metro Line 4 and Hangzhou Metro Line 1 and Line 5. In Macao, MTR Corporation was awarded the contract for the operations and maintenance service of the Macao Light Rapid Transit Taipa Line, the first railway system in the city.

Over the years, MTR Corporation has expanded into property business developments in mainland China with successes including “Tiara” residential units, TIA Mall in Shenzhen and Ginza Mall in Beijing.

Australia Operations

In Australia, MTR Corporation operates the Melbourne Metropolitan Rail Service and the Sydney Metro Northwest.
